| The Story of Sameer Sameer is one of the boys who recently entered our tailoring program in Kathmandu. He has a problem with his right hip, due to a bad infection. Because he was living in a poor, remote area of the mid eastern part of Nepal, he did not have access to proper healthcare. That is why the infection got worse and worse and affected his hip so badly he could not walk anymore. A mobile team of HRDC children’s hospital found him and offered him medical care. This was a real relief for his parents, who have four children in total: one daughter and two more sons who are disabled. Besides that, they belong to the Biswakaram caste; one of the lowest castes in Nepal of which the people are generally discriminated. But HRDC believes that all people are equal and that is why Sameer got the chance to be treated. After several operations, he has improved a lot and is now able to walk with an orthopedic device for his foot. Our local staff selected Sameer to enter the vocational training; another chance for him to improve his future life. In the safe environment of our center - where he is accepted as a complete person, regardless his handicap or caste - he can continue to develop his self-esteem. Furthermore, he learns a real profession, which will give him the possibility to contribute in the care of his sister and brothers. |
